Khajuraho :A complex of temples in the India state of Madhya Pradesh near the village of Khajuraho (about 350 miles southeast of New Delhi) is one of India’s most popular tourist destinations. The temples are famous for their erotic art. There were once 85 temples in the Khajuraho complex spread over an area of about eight square miles.

The Khajuraho temple complex is India’s largest group of medieval Hindu temples famous for the erotic (some would say explicit) sculptures decorating the exterior of so many of the temples. While the temples represent the pinnacle of a particular period of temple architecture in North India.

Half-day sight seeing of Eastern & Western Group of temples.

Eastern Group of Temples . The Khajuraho temples were built during the reign of the Chandelas. While some show marks of a Shaivite sensibility, others clearly manifest the influence of Vaishnaism, Jainism, and tantrism. These temples have an architectural character distinct from that of any other group of temples elsewhere in the country. Instead of being contained within the customary enclosure wall, each temple stands on a high and solid masonry terrace. Though none of the temples are very large, they are still imposing structures because of their elegant proportions and rich surface sculpture .

Western Group of Temples . The western group of temples which the visitor encounters first, is situated along the Bamitha-Rajnagar road to the west of the Khajuraho village. This is the largest and most important group with most of its constituent temples laid out roughly in two rows. The two monuments described first are the farthest ones of the group and not spectacular, but they are of considerable significance for the early history of the local architectural style.

Varanasi , known to the devout as Kashi, is said to have been founded by Shiva, Lord of the Universe. One of the oldest living cities in the world, as also one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India , Varanasi is a major tourist attraction. Situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges , the city has been a centre of learning and civilisation for over 2000 years. It was at Sarnath, only 10 km away from Varanasi , that the Buddha, first preached his message of enlightenment, 25 centuries ago.

Varanasi derives its present name from the two tributaries of the Ganga - Varuna and Asi - between which it is situated. According to historians, the city was founded around ten centuries before the birth of Christ. The city finds mention in holy scriptures like 'Vamana Purana', Buddhist texts and the 'Mahabharata'. The unique relationship between the mighty Ganga and the city forms the essence of Varanasi - 'the land of sacred light'.

Afternoon leave for half-day sightseeing of Varanasi including visit to temples and ghats.

Life in the city of Varanasi revolves around its over one hundred Ghats (river landings). The River Ganga flows from north to south, and the city forms a circular shape from the Asi ghat in the south up to the confluence of the Varuna river with the Ganga . Thousands of pilgrims come to bath and worship in the river at the first light of dawn.
